At the heart of Fredericksburg, a grassroots movement is transforming how we support each other. FXBG Fridge & Food Rescue champions the belief that no one should go hungry when good food is going to waste—by rescuing surplus food, supporting neighbors, and building community resilience.
A Vision Rooted in Mutual Aid
This initiative is all about community-led solutions for food security:
Free Fridges & Community Pantries — Food “Give, Take, Share” stations located around town (like Downtown Greens and UMW’s Gwen Hale Resource Center) where anyone can drop off or pick up food, with no questions asked.
Food Rescue — Partnering with local businesses to recover unsold but edible food that would otherwise go to waste. Community volunteers safely collect and redistribute these items.
Indoor Farming & Gardening Support — Sharing knowledge and access to soil-based and hydroponic gardening, helping neighbors grow their own food and share produce.
How to Connect & Get Involved
FXBG Fridge & Food Rescue thrives on community participation:
Discord & Email — Engage with the group online. Questions, updates, and participation are easily accessible via their Discord server or email list.
Monthly In-Person Gatherings — Held the first Monday of every month from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Downtown Fredericksburg Library (lower level). These meetups are open to the public and encourage newcomers to engage, ask questions, and get involved.
Where You'll Find Them in Fredericksburg
Downtown Greens Free Fridge & Pantry—Located at the corner of Princess Anne Street and Dixon Street in the upper garden of Downtown Greens. It’s available 24/7, all year long, no appointment needed.
Additional Fridge Locations—FXBG also supports other community fridges and pantries like the one at UMW, and they’re continually expanding—new ones are in the works!
Why FXBG Matters
Food Waste ReductionFood that would otherwise spoil gets diverted into community fridges, benefiting those who need it most and easing environmental strain.
Open Access & Zero Means TestingFXBG embraces a nonjudgmental, all-access approach—anyone can share food or take food without proof of need, reflecting the spirit of mutual aid.
Cultivating a Culture of SupportWhether it’s through shared gardening ideas, rescuing meals, or monthly neighborhood gatherings, FXBG empowers local connections and communal care.
